The Hauntings of Alcatraz

Located in San Francisco Bay with a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown San Francisco, you’ll find perhaps the most famous prison in the world. Alcatraz, nicknamed “The Rock”, was originally known as “La Isla de los Alcatraces” or “The Island of the Pelicans” because of its appearance as a barren white rock. The white was caused by pelican droppings, hence the name. It served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, then a military prison followed by a federal prison until 1963, when it became a national recreation area. Today it is maintained by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and nearly a million visitors per year stop by to check the place out.
The island, believed to be an evil place by Native Americans, has seen centuries of death from accidents, murders, and suicides. With this dark history, it’s no wonder Alcatraz is said to be one of the most haunted places in the nation. If ghosts return to haunt the places where they suffered traumatic experiences when they were alive, then Alcatraz must be bursting at the seams with spirits.
For years there have been reports of mysterious happenings on Alcatraz Island. These reports come from visitors, former guards, former prisoners, and national park service employees. From the original lighthouse reappearing on occasion to clanging, screaming, and sobbing, there are too many tales to put into this short article. It would definitely take a book to tell them all. Some of the strange occurences are recounted in the following paragraphs.
The Lighthouse – There have been several reports that on foggy nights the old lighthouse, built in 1854 and torn down after it was damaged in the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake, will suddenly appear, accompanied by an eerie whistling sound and a flashing green light that makes its way slowly around the island and then vanishes as suddenly as it appears.
The Grounds – Many guards and park rangers have reported experiencing unexplainable crashing sounds, cell doors mysteriously closing, unearthly screams, and intense feelings of being watched. A number of guards from 1946 through 1963 experienced something out of the ordinary at one time or another. There have been reports of sounds of sobbing and moaning, horrible smells, phantom cannon shots, gun shots, and screams. Once in a while, groups of phantom prisoners and soldiers appear in front of startled guards, guests, and the families who lived on the island. None of these occurances have ever been explained.
The door and the corridor – Behind a door in Cellblock C that looks as if it has been welded shut, lies the utility corridor where Bernard Coy, Joseph Cretzer and Marvin Hubbard were killed by grenades and bullets during the bloodiest escape attempt in Alcatraz’s history in 1946. Additionally, the attempt took the lives of two guards and injured 18 others. The trial afterward resulted in the execution of two more convicts who took part in the aborted escape. Behind this door can sometimes be heard loud clanging along with the sounds of people running as if trying to escape and disembodied voices. Others have reported seeing the apparitions of men wearing fatigues at the site of the riot that left the three prisoners dead. As a result, this utility corridor is recognized as one of the most haunted spots in the prison.
The laundry room – Also in Cellblock C is the laundry room that is said to hold an unseen presence. The story is told that a hit man named Butcher was killed in the laundry room. The room is said to occasionally emanate a strong odor of smoke, as if something was on fire. The sensation of the choking smoke would drive guards out of the room, only to return a few minutes later, the area now completely smoke free.
The most haunted area on Alcatraz is Cellblock D, or solitary, as it was often called. D-Block, which became known as the Treatment Unit was made up of 42 cells with varying restrictions. None of the prisoners put in D-Block was able to have contact with the general population. These inmates were not allowed to work or go to the mess hall to eat; they had to eat in their cells. They were allowed one visit to the recreation yard and two showers a week. These cells faced the Golden Gate Bridge, from which fierce cold winds often blew and one guard who worked D-Block was notorious for turning on the air conditioning to make it even colder for those confined on the block.
Five of the cells in D-Block, cells 9-14, are known as “The Hole,”. These cells contained only a sink and toilet, had no windows and only one light with a low-wattage bulb that could be turned off by the guards on a whim. The darkness made it seem like a hole in the ground. Reserved for the most serious prison rule breakers, these cells were located on the bottom tier, the coldest place in the prison. All mattresses were taken away during the day and the prisoners were not allowed time in the yard, showers, or reading materials. Inmates could be sentenced to up to 19 days in the hole, completely isolated from the rest of the world.
Needless to say, these horrible conditions led to misery, anger, and possibly even insanity. That ambiance seems to linger to this day. Most people who go to Cellblock D get feelings of sudden intensity and a feeling of cold in certain cells, especially cell 14-D. This cell is often reported to be 20 degrees colder than the rest of the cells on the block. Psychics who have visited the area reported picking up on the feelings of torture, misery, and abuse that were left behind by 29 years’ worth of prisoners who were forced to stay there. These cells are so eerie that some national park service employees refuse to go there alone.
A guard who worked at the prison in the 1940’s reported that guards often saw the ghostly presence of a man dressed in late 1800’s prison attire was often seen walking the hallway of “The Hole”. Perhaps the strangest event occured when an inmate locked in a cell in “The Hole” immediately began to scream that someone with glowing eyes was in there with him. The spectral prisoner had become so much of a practical joke among the guards that the convict’s cries were ignored. The inmate’s screams continued well into the night, and then suddenly stopped. When the guards inspected the cell, the convict was dead with a terrible expression on his face and noticeable handprints around his throat. The autopsy revealed that the strangulation could not have been self-inflicted.
At the time, many believed the inmate was strangled by a guard who got tired of hearing the inmate scream, but no one ever admitted to the strangling. Most believed the prisoner was killed by the restless, evil spirit of the nineteenth century prisoner who was so often seen wandering the corridors.
As a footnote to this tale, when the guards lined-up the convicts for the daily count, there was one too many convicts in the line-up. At the end of the row, stood the recently strangled convict. As everyone looked on in stunned silence, the ghostly figure vanished.
As the years go by, ghost hunters, authors, crime buffs and curiosity-seekers continue to visit the island hoping to have their own encounter with the ghosts of Alcatraz. Although most encounter nothing, they do have a tendancy to leave with a feeling of uneasiness. The majority of the ghostly experiences of Alcatraz have been reported by former guards and national park service employees who often spend hours alone on the island. Many claim not to believe in the supernatural but occasionally, one of them will admit that weird things happen here that they cannot explain.

Readers often ask how I found the high level of detail that appears in Jerry’s Riot: The True Story of Montana’s 1959 Prison Disturbance.
The short answer is this: from people who were there. The longer answer is a bit more complicated.
Calamities yield personal stories big and small. In major influential tragedies such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina, the resulting impressions, reactions and eyewitness accounts might stretch to infinity. And what older American today can’t remember exactly what he or she was doing when President Kennedy was assassinated?
The riot happened 49 years ago this April. To people who were involved, inside or outside the walls at Montana State Prison in downtown Deer Lodge, the riot happened yesterday. That’s how clearly they remember it. But like in any calamity, people remember best what was right in front of them. It’s the author’s responsibility to assemble the memory fragments into whole cloth.
In researching Jerry’s Riot I conducted hundreds of interviews. Almost all of those people remembered details that emotion had branded to their brain. Guards remembered dripping water, the warden recalled being served slices of cake after being taken hostage, and women described watching the prison for hours on end for sign of their husbands. Inmates gave me first-hand accounts of the takeover.
I corroborated the personal stories with legal documents such as affidavits taken from inmates in the weeks after the riot. It became easier to see the total picture, especially as details brought history to life. While many people involved in the riot had died long before I started my research, many others remained. In some cases relatives of people who had died remembered critical detail. Most of it turned out to be credible and accurate, to the extent that an author can determine such things more than 40 years afterwards. I discarded some of what was described to me as fiction.
Capturing genuine detail is a race against time. Several people I interviewed for the book are now gone as well, including some of the guards held hostage, wives of hostages and a National Guard commander involved in the rescue efforts. But since 2005 when the first edition of Jerry’s Riot was published, more people with personal stories have stepped forward to offer even greater detail.
As I concluded in the acknowledgements portion of the book:

Trends In The Business Office

In the 1980s, it wasn’t uncommon to see large, oversized desks, wingback leather executive chairs and lots of filing cabinets. In the 1990s, offices became more compact. The prevalence of the computer began to reduce the amount of paper files needed and the filing cabinets began to wane. Office workers realized that working at a computer desk was much different than working at a desk where all work was done with a typewriter and calculator. The 4 Important Things You Must Know or Do Before Becoming a Detention Officer

There are a number of different things that you must know or do before becoming a detention officer. The basic responsibility of this position includes guarding individuals who are considered a suspect in a crime, and are waiting for their trial to occur, or watching over those that have received a conviction and have been sentenced to pay for their crime.
The conviction may be served in a jail, a prison that is considered to be reformatory, or even in what is called a penitentiary. In this article, you will be introduced to the 4 important things you must know or do before becoming a detention officer.
1. Roles and Responsibilities:
As a Detention Officer, you will have many roles and responsibilities. Your main responsibility is to maintain a high level of security in the facility that you serve. You must ensure that all of the inmates that you are responsible for are accounted for at all times.
It is also your responsibility to make certain that potential disturbances are prevented, and if they break out anyway, you must be able to take complete control over the situation and put a stop to them. All forms of battery and assault within the facility that you serve must be prevented, and dealt with appropriately. In addition to this, you must work to ensure that inmates do not escape.
2. Training:
Training is an essential component of becoming a Detention Officer. While many facilities will offer training that is on the job, there are many prisons and jails that will require that you attend a Corrections Academy or Criminal Justice school.
While these academies vary in standards and educational requirements by state, they almost always strive for successful candidates to have a certain level of physical health and endurance, a general knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, firearms training for proficiency and self defense training.
3. Growth and Outlook:

The conviction may be served in a jail, a prison that is considered to be reformatory, or even in what is called a penitentiary. In this article, you will be introduced to the 4 important things you must know or do before becoming a detention officer.
1. Roles and Responsibilities:
As a Detention Officer, you will have many roles and responsibilities. Your main responsibility is to maintain a high level of security in the facility that you serve. You must ensure that all of the inmates that you are responsible for are accounted for at all times.
It is also your responsibility to make certain that potential disturbances are prevented, and if they break out anyway, you must be able to take complete control over the situation and put a stop to them. All forms of battery and assault within the facility that you serve must be prevented, and dealt with appropriately. In addition to this, you must work to ensure that inmates do not escape.
2. Training:
Training is an essential component of becoming a Detention Officer. While many facilities will offer training that is on the job, there are many prisons and jails that will require that you attend a Corrections Academy or Criminal Justice school.
While these academies vary in standards and educational requirements by state, they almost always strive for successful candidates to have a certain level of physical health and endurance, a general knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, firearms training for proficiency and self defense training.

Obedience to Authority

Many people wonder why these informants go along with this? Why would anyone go along with causing the suicide of their fellow citizens, or enacting cruelty on someones cats, dogs, kids, family, property etc? Why would you knowingly go along with a practice that many would consider to be evil?
The answer is obedience to authority. As long as an authority figure is giving the orders, experiments have shown that most people will go along with whatever is being ordered, even if those orders are to inflict pain on another human being.
Let’s start with the Milgram experiments.

As part of the experiment a stranger off the street is asked to shock an individual as part of a learning or behaviour modification experiment. The person doing the shocking is told that this will help the person to learn the answers to the question. The person being shocked has agreed to the experiment.
The person giving the shocks is giving a test shock of the lowest voltage to see what the pain is like. It’s not pleasant. They are told that if the person fails to answer the question, they are to increase the voltage and to keep shocking the person till they get the answer correct.
The person giving the answers starts to get the questions wrong, they are asked to keep going by the person in authority. The person answering the questions, starts to scream out in pain, sometimes even screaming, my heart, my heart.
Many times the person giving the shock wants to stop what they are doing, but they are told don’t pay it any mind we have to keep going, and so they are goaded on by the experimenter to the end of the experiment. 65% of those in the studied continued to the very end of the voltage metre.
Now imagine you are an average citizen, you are asked to become an Informant by the state, country that you love. At some point you realise that what you are doing is wrong and that people are being harmed. Let’s say you come across a Gang Stalking website, and realise what you are taking part in. How can you stop?
First you are bound by a gag order, so you can’t say anything. Second if you go to the police, local authorities, they are taking part, so you can’t go there, human rights organizations, the same thing. Since becoming an Informant you realise that this is systemic and that the majority of your community is in some way taking part. What do you do where do you turn?
You can ask to not take part, but many people are afraid of being targeted themselves the same way, experiencing the same sort of harassment. There is a real cult like mentality about what is happening, even if most people do not identify it as such, so how would you get out, much less help the target?
In many cases they can’t, and some of them are as trapped as we are. Either get the punishment or give the punishment. Not a great choice. This is not true for all of them, some are just really lowlifes and happy to go along with this, and would report anyone not following suit.
Within the system you can try to hint to the target about what is happening, try to help expose what is happening. Don’t allow yourself to feel or become powerless, keep thinking, keep finding ways, try to keep feeling. Remain hopeful. If you let the stress of the situation overwhelm you, a part of you disassociates emotionally, and you became biddable, capable of not much but following orders.
How quickly can this shift come about, in a really short space of time. The Milgram experiment happened within an hour or two.
The next experiment happened over a few days.

The scary part about this, is that thy knew in advance that they were part of an experiment, they were paid for it and everything. Which should indicate that they would be able to leave if they wanted to, but that did not happen.
The experiment was suppose to last 2 weeks, but had to be ended after six days. One group of students were assigned to the role of prisoners, another to the role of guards.

The prisoners (students pretending to be prisoners) started to riot, the cops (students pretending to be cops) started to get brutal with them. Made them do all sorts of sick and sadistic things. Tried to get some to turn into snitches, one prisoner faked being crazy to get out, they turned on each other in some cases, and just fell in line with obeying authority, in most cases. The person conducting the experiment actually thought he was a warden, he got so caught up in the role.

This experiment was anything but. Because a crank caller pretended to be an authority figure. Police officer. Average sheeple were willing to carry out horrible actions on innocent people.

On Jan. 26, 2003, according a police report in Davenport, Iowa, an assistant manager at an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar conducted a degrading 90-minute search of a waitress at the behest of a caller who said he was a regional manager — even though the man had called collect, and despite the fact the assistant manager had read a company memo warning about hoax calls just a month earlier. He later told police he’d forgotten about the memo.[9] [/quote]
His downfall came when he was able to get one of these sheeple to sexually assault a teenage girl over the phone. All the while giving the instructions. She complied, because an authority figure was on the phone.

At the caller’s request, Nix then threatens to beat Ogborn again and forces Ogborn to kiss him and then perform oral sex on him. Ogborn says at the point of sexual assault she was scarred for life.[11] The tape showed that Summers re-entered the office several times and dismissed Ogborn’s pleas for help, a statement which Summers denies.
When another employee was asked to take part and objected, Summers decided to call the store manager, whom the caller claimed to have on another phone line. She then discovered that the store manager had not spoken to any police officers, and that the call had been a hoax. A quick-thinking employee dialed *69 to determine that the caller had called from a supermarket pay phone in Panama City, Florida. Summers then called police, who arrested Nix and began an investigation to find the caller. [/quote]
The above scenario is really sick and hard to believe that something like that could happen, mush less that similar circumstances happened at least 70 times prior to this incident, but it’s true.
Other events show us that people are willing to kill upon request, even innocent woman, children and the elderly, while others are not.

At the end of the day what can really be said about these incidents are occurrences? Why are some people driven by a higher authority, a greater code of conduct than others? Why are some not willing to go along with this, when others just fall in line, or stand helplessly by and let these atrocities happen? Why do some decline to become Informants for the system while others just accept? Why do some just go along with injustice and corruption, while others turn away from all appearances of evil?
Why do some question, while others don’t?
There are a variety of reasons, many people are culturally engineered or programed to obey authority, many have never been in a similar situation before and their survival instinct is to comply, because everyone else is going along with it. Humans for the most part are social creatures and very few have the capacity to stand on their own, or be excluded from society, friends, family, neighbours and if the corruption, or atrocity is systemic, most will just fall in line with what is happening, just like in Nazi Germany.

There are a variety of reasons, many people are culturally engineered or programed to obey authority, many have never been in a similar situation before and their survival instinct is to comply, because everyone else is going along with it. Humans for the most part are social creatures and very few have the capacity to stand on their own, or be excluded from society, friends, family, neighbours and if the corruption, or atrocity is systemic, most will just fall in line with what is happening, just like in Nazi Germany.

Hollywood movies have long depicted high security installations that use finger and handprints, eye (iris and retina) scans, facial and voice recognition and so on, in order to verify identity. Of course, media typically depicts the technology as being used by spies, high-tech corporate installations, the ultra-rich and other elites of society: possibly to protect priceless assets and information, or to prevent espionage and treason. Only recently has it become an exciting time for the rest of us, technologically speaking, as “the digital age” has brought electronic biometric technology to a quality standard and a price that is within the reach of the average consumer.
Fingerprint Scanning Biometric Door Locks
The newest consumer item is a biometric access control device that scans a person’s fingerprint in order to allow access to a property, or even to a vehicle. High-tech industry commentators are seeing biometrics as the new emergent technology that will eventually replace, or at least be offered alongside all other forms of access control (such as keys, or electronic access control devices based upon PIN code keypads, magnetic card swiping, or Radio Frequency ID (RFID) tokens/key-fobs). One of the principle reasons for this is that the biometric device potentially offers an entry control solution that is free of the typical problems that beset older technologies. That advantage might be simply avoiding that horrible feeling you get when you are standing at your front door and can’t find your keys, or when you have so many PINS in your head that you can’t remember the right one to gain access to a property. Maybe it is when the so-called magnetic stripe card has lost its magnetic properties, or you have lost the card; or when a RFID key-fob has run out of batteries, is stolen, or simply just fails to communicate to the lock. Biometrics could be advantageous for those that have physical difficulty with the operation of any of these older technologies. With biometrics, all you need is a finger, placed upon a small screen that scans the fingerprint, and then you then gain access to your property.
This is a relatively new technology for the consumer marketplace, and so if you are thinking of trying a biometric access control device, it pays to be cautious in terms of the unit that you select. What do you need to look for? Knowing this might mean the difference between having a new and more amiable relationship with your front door, or one which ends with a lot of frustration, as you imitate Jack Nicholson in an axe-wielding duplication of the “Here’s Johnny” scene from the movie “The Shining”. Hence, the following are some things to think about when selecting a biometric device.
When to Use Biometric EAC
The wide range of benefits in not carrying or using keys or other physical devices cannot be described in much detail here—and most people can instantly think of a list of benefits for their own home. Suffice it to say, the potential advantages may be many and varied. They may range from potential increased accessibility for the disabled, for the elderly and young children, through to benefits obtained in our “great Aussie beach culture”, where many will see it as ideal to be able to go to the beach and not have to take along a set of keys (or other devices that could be lost or stolen). Some applications can achieve huge benefits from implementing a biometric access control system, where inventory control of keys or other devices over an ever changing clientele would be “a nightmare” or just prohibitively expensive. A few examples are day-care centres, schools, industrial complexes and corporate offices, and high security government and commercial operations. The USA’s “Disneyland” (and also the Hong Kong location) have implemented a fingerprint scanning system called “Ticket Tag” to control all of its visitors, with the system controlling the complex array of access levels depending upon what kinds of tickets the visitors purchase. Hotels can also strongly benefit from eliminating the need to maintain key or card inventories, whilst freeing the guest from having either to carry or to check keys at reception every time they enter/exit the building. Computer networks can remotely control some biometric locks, and some locks are programmable to delete a guests’ authority to access a room automatically, after a specified time interval. Many biometric devices have built in “audit trails”, which can keep track of entries by user, date and time. This can be useful to prevent “buddy bundying” in workplaces, or provide a form of surveillance over children for concerned parents. The potential uses and benefits of biometrics are only limited by the imagination, and some benefits may make a world of difference when compared to older technologies.
Fortunately, in most applications, biometric technology is a suitable replacement for older technologies, and biometrics can offer a versatile access control solution for residential, government and commercial/industrial situations. However, there are a few exceptions. A case occurred a few years ago where a British prison invested in biometric fingerprint scanning devices to control access through the internal parts of the prison. Because the biometric device selected for the prison was not accurate, inmates were quick to exploit the weakness of the particular device, which simply did not have a good enough discrimination between different fingers to be able to keep prisoners out. Consequently, they were able to gain access to unauthorised internal areas. (The important topic of the accuracy of biometric devices is discussed immediately below.) Whilst overall prison security was not compromised, for a short while the prison black market flourished. Some commentators on this event rightly noted that a prison was not an entirely good place to have a biometric device, since some prisoners might not hesitate to cut off a guard’s finger, if it meant access to freedom (or in some cases, an extra carton of cigarettes). It is certainly the last place that I would want to install biometric access control, but not necessarily for security concerns, because biometric modules can sometimes discriminate between a connected and a severed finger, based upon measurements such as body temperature reading. The primary reason for not installing such devices in prison is simply that inmates might erroneously perceive that they could use the severed finger to access their freedom, and—irrespective of their success in escape—the false perception alone might work much to an unlucky prison officer’s detriment.
Physical attributes may sometimes not marry well with biometric technology. One visitor to Disney had problems with the readers because she had lymphodema in her right arm, which was the one she selected to have the fingers scanned. When her arm swelled during the course of the day, her fingers expanded and became different fingers in the eyes of the biometric scanner. A simple cure in her case would have been to use the arm that did not swell, but it does give an insight into a problem that could occur for some users. Very rarely, people have little actual fingerprint which can confuse some biometric readers, resulting in the poor operation of the device for such a user.
Biometrics Accuracy
In purchasing a biometric lock one must be careful to select a brand of device that has high levels of accuracy, or to put it another way, low levels of error. In biometrics, there are two typical measurements made regarding biometric error: that of FRR or “False Reject Ratio” and FAR or “false acceptance ratio”. The lower each ratio or rate, the better the biometric product.
FRR is also known as the “insult rate”, and this is quite an appropriate term. It involves the amount of times that you are insulted by your door lock, as it erroneously but calmly beeps to inform you that you are not actually you, but rather a pretender to the throne. FRR equates directly to the usability of the device. An enrolled user (that is, someone whose fingerprint is held within the memory of the lock or lock control as an authorised entrant) should be permitted entrance easily. If a biometric device has a low FRR, then it should not require a series of attempts before you can enter your home or workplace. A high FRR or insult rate biometric can be a frustrating device to live with.
The second measure of accuracy, FAR, is critical. It relates to the security provided by the device. How easy is it for the fingerprint of another user—an actual “pretender to the throne”—to get into the device? How easy is it for a mimicking technology to fool the lock into thinking it is the real finger? A high FAR or fraud rate can be a security violation just waiting to happen.
Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics
In purchasing a biometric lock, look carefully at the FAR and FRR rates. They should both be as low as possible. However, it also pays to consider the way in which the specifications are gathered. Some biometric locks use what might be called a “security setting” in order to compromise between fingerprint discrimination and authorised users ease of entry: that is to say, a setting that allows you to trade off performance between either false insults or false permission granted to unauthorised parties. In my opinion an altogether bad thing to have on a biometric device, because the user should not have to be forced to tweak with crucial settings: it should all be purely automatic. Performance of a biometric lock should be about achieving both levels of accuracy at the same time, because that is what is demanded in the real world. Manufacturers that build an adjustment level into their device are possibly trying to attain better performance figures for their product than what they can deliver in practice.
It also pays not to be too serious about the performance specifications that are offered by manufacturers. Whilst they might serve as a useful guideline, the specification that states, for example, a “1:10000 false reject ratio” might never attain such performance in practice. Such performance figures are based upon a mix of empirical data and mathematical analyses. The best thing to do is to test the model with your fingerprint, place the enrolled finger into the device and gain entry a number of times, and see how repeatable it is. If your finger scans are repeatedly permitted in until you get tired of testing the entry operation, then chances are the lock is going to be easy to live with. If you find a lock that only beeps a denial of entry and requires you to rescan one time in a hundred, it would be safe to say that this is going to be a good lock to use on an everyday basis. Rare physical attributes (as noted earlier) can sometimes confuse some biometric readers. So test first, and make sure the product is specifically suitable for your fingers.
Another indicator of reliability might be to check with the supplier as to who makes the biometric module within the biometric device. Are they a reputable and recognised source of high technology hardware?
Biometric Ease of Use

It is not much good having a biometric device if you need the proverbial Ph.D. in order to use it. Some locks are so complex to use that even watching a video of the steps required to operate the device (let alone program it) is a confusing thing. Of course, the ease with which you can use a biometric device contributes to or detracts much in terms of how happy you will be with your purchase. Look for a large and easy to see screen, with controlling functions being menu navigated in an intuitive way. If the biometric device is set up like, for example–the most user-friendly mobile phones or digital cameras, with features such as four way navigational keypads, then it is likely to be user friendly. Try to ensure that if you want to get to a function, you do not need both a user’s manual and a penchant for astrophysics: rather, that you just need the ability to read a simple menu and press navigation keys or selection buttons.
Don’t neglect the outside operating interface either, when it comes to choosing a good biometric device. If the unit has an industry standard numeric keypad on the outside lock body, this is indicative of easy entry control when you choose to use a pin number instead of, or in addition to, a fingerprint scan. A full keypad at the front of the device is also indicative that entering numbers into the biometric device (for programming basic operations) will be an easier thing than one that only has a few buttons and does not properly represent the full range of numeric digits (0-9).
Biometrics and Privacy
There has been some justifiable concern raised by privacy advocates and in the press more generally, about privacy concerns related to biometrics usage. Look for biometric units that do not capture and process merely the image of the fingerprint but rather use “minutiae points”, which are very specific details taken from a finger scan. A biometric device works with minutiae points by immediately capturing particular facets of the finger and fingerprint, followed by mathematical analysis of—and then encrypted encoding—of those facets. Therefore, such a biometric device is not actually comparing pictures, but rather the very specific data that it has collected. Drawing data from the biometric system can result in little but the gathering of useless data, rather than compromising the biometric data of an individual. Some locks and the network software programs that attach to them (if they are network capable) will also allow lock programming so that a guest user is only kept in memory for a specified period of time. At the end of that period, the fingerprint minutiae data is automatically purged from the system.
Biometrics Durability & Appearance
Durability is quite straightforward. Take a good look at the lock: is it protected from the elements? Some locks have sliding covers that protect the biometric scanning window and buttons from dust, dirt, water and so on. Is the body made well? Some locks have thicker walls of alloy in their construction to make them stronger; some have plastic parts that make the unit more vulnerable. Is the finish constructed to last? Some biometrics have “nanotech” finishes that make them as high-tech on the outside as they are on the inside, and make them very resistant to scratches that can make them less appealing. Solidly constructed locks that are based on a mortise design may be a little more expensive, but are the most robust in terms of security—which is of course what they are there for at the end of the day.
This leads to the final criterion you should consider when purchasing a lock: is it attractive, and does it visually complement (or burden) your premises. Regrettably, it seems that many biometric locks were designed with functionality in mind, and little or no consideration was given to appearance: but there is no rule set in stone that a biometric device has to be ugly; and some units are beautiful and elegant, and make a strong statement upon any front door.
Conclusion
When everything is taken into account, taking the step to adopt this new technology can be a rewarding experience: just be careful that you select the right device for you, your situation and your “aesthetic sensibilities”. Chances are you will be very much rewarded for your care in purchase, and you’ll be able to really enjoy the best things that this new and exciting technology can provide.

We use biometrics everyday when we use the ‘computer’ that we call the human mind: for example, when we recognize someone by looking at his or her face, or when we check a written signature against what we trust to be a bona-fide copy of a signature. Now we can use electronic devices to make biometric judgements about the authenticity of a person—that is, “is person x who they say they are?” Since the information and digital age is upon us, the technology has come about that makes authentication exceptionally accurate, and potentially a much more reliable means of authenticating a person than traditional, human-judgement based biometrics.
Experts in authentication technologies usually classify the criteria that are used to verify someone’s identity based upon a few different categories. “What you know”, or W-Y-K, is one form of authentication: a common version of this occurs when you give an electronic bank terminal your PIN (or Personal identification number). “What you have”, or W-Y-H, is another criterion, and this refers to the possession of some identifying object such as an identification card or passport: but you could even consider a simple door key as a kind of W-Y-H proof of identity for allowing access into a private or controlled access property. Biometrics, according to this scheme of classification, would generally be termed “What you are” or W-Y-A. It is the presentation of a physical aspect of yourself that is quite uniquely and individually you, in order to obtain authentication.
