When I was a kid I used to watch the workers in my Dad’s office work away in their little modular office furniture cubicles. It was like watching little worker ants dutifully managing the one or two tasks that they had been assigned for life, thinking nothing of themselves. I didn’t think the people seemed very happy. To me it seemed so drab and gray in there. The tables and desks didn’t have any character, were usually heavy metal and much to small to be any real use. Everything was institutional and bland. I wondered how those poor people could get through the day without going crazy. Maybe they didn’t.

Of course my Dad’s office was different. He was the boss so he got to enjoy the perks of having his own office. No boring modular office furniture in there! It seemed so big and impressive. I remember a big leather studded chair and tall wall shelves full of important looking books and figurines. Plenty of tables and chairs, and even a couch. There were always stacks of file folders and papers on his desk that made me feel like I was in a very important place. We used to hide under his desk, or behind the large plants by the window. We could imagine that we were almost anyone in that place. But usually it was enough to know that Dad would protect us from anything as dreary as ordinary work tasks. I admit, it was a charmed youth! But, oh how the times have changed!

Now, as I sit here in my ergonomically correct office chair, surrounded by truly functional modular office furniture, I am struck with an irony. I am not the boss, but I have nicer furniture around me than my father did all those years ago in his lavish office. Modular office furniture has come so far. I have the privacy and quiet I need. I have lots of storage space and shelving. No more drab colors, but instead, a beautiful mahogany (well melamine anyway) desk, bookcase, and credenza. And all richly appointed, warm, and elegant. My work area is truly a versatile and functional surrounding, but at the same time stylish and welcoming. I don’t dread coming into the office. How could I with modular office furniture appointed with designer handles, ball-bearing drawer slides and so much room for my projects that I can arrange everything just how I want it without feeling like my space cramps my style and creativity.

And that is one of the nice thing about modern modular office furniture. It makes workers (myself happily included) more productive and happy. It can be expanded as the needs of business grows, and it comes in a huge variety of configurations, colors, and styles. Office desks, conference tables, reception desks, comfortable chairs, efficient filing systems, printer stands and computer stations, complete workstations and cubicles; all of these modular office furniture pieces and arrangements have changed the office landscape into a modern wonder of efficiency and peace; good enough for the boss. Well, for a modern worker who’s dad was a boss anyway.

Within the last 20 years, ergonomic and ADA regulations have had the greatest impact on the way employers look at their employees and their facility. Designing and planning with a universal concept has not only allowed facilities to comply with federal laws, but has reduced workers compensation costs and made the workplace more healthful by employing ergonomic office furniture.

As an office furniture manufacturer, our role is not that of the ergonomist, but that of solution provider. MAiSPACE works with clients to identify those ergonomic issues that can be reduced or eliminated with proper office furniture.

Of primary importance in purchasing ergonomic office furniture is to identify the ergonomic risk factors prevalent in your facility. Most workers in today’s computerized office spend the bulk of their day sitting. While sitting takes less energy to hold the torso erect and balanced, it also introduces certain disadvantages to the body. The natural curve of the lumbar flattens in a sitting position, which increases disk pressure. Chairs can also apply pressure to the back of the legs, cutting off blood flow to the muscles. These are all contributing factors in producing lower back pain, which statistic show account for more lost work time that the common cold.

MAiSPACE

MAiCHAIR, the most affordable, fully functional ergonomic seating line on the market today, is MAiSPACE’s contribution to office furniture seating. MAiCHAIR incorporates all the comfort, style and adjustment features usually reserved for much more expensive chairs. MAiCHAIR’s flexible backrest conforms to the spine and provides critical support in the lumbar region. The contoured seat cushion and waterfall edge improves blood flow, and the syncro-tilt mechanism helps maintain the correct posture through a full range of motion.

MAiCHAIR’s adjustable features include a 5 position headrest, an engineered, flexible plastic backrest, adjustable arms, a lightweight five star base. State of the art in systems furniture, its syncro-tilt provides adjustable tension resistance, pneumatic seat height adjustment and multi position tilt-lock control in one easy to adjust mechanism.

Other human factors that need to be addressed, is motor function and vision. The human hand has been called our most valuable industrial resource, yet it also the most susceptible to a host of trauma and motor disorders. Keying, mousing, writing, grasping and handling paper work and manuals, put strain on the hand’s fine motor functions. Vision is labor intensive, providing us upwards of 85% of the information we receive from our surroundings. The eyes are vulnerable to numerous environmental factors including glare, inappropriate display technology and awkward workplace design that forces the worker to compensate for poor viewing conditions with poor body postures.

MAiSPACE’s primary focus is our systems products. An important advantage of our ergonomic office furniture systems is the ability to make the workstation ergonomically correct. The MAiSPACE system is flexible and adjustable to meet individual preferences. The user creates a comfortable environment by determining the optimal placement of panel-hung components, adjustable at 1 inch increments; having flexible non-handed orientation for the workstation; and curvilinear work surfaces with cascade edges. Height adjustable keyboard trays and tool rail tiles allow for easy access to work tool. Incorporating the effectiveness and well-being aspects of ergonomics into office furniture purchases can produce cost benefits in terms of significant reduction of workman’s compensation, insurance expenditures and absenteeism and most importantly increased productivity through worker satisfaction. Additionally, features that such as tackable acoustic tiles, work tool rails or slat wall, white boards and non-handed components with off-modular capabilities, allow workers to be both productive and express their individual identities. Office furniture workstations become a safe and comfortable workspace.

In 1968, the first iteration of the office furniture workstation was introduced. The idea spawned a workplace revolution that not only changed the way office furniture looked but was able to adapt to the way people worked. The idea was to have the furniture components — the partitions and the worksurfaces and shelves attached to them — modular and completely adjustable, so that offices could be made to fit the individual rather than the masses. And because of the proximity of shelves to desks, paperwork and other materials were easily accessible, not filed away in cabinets or remote bookcases. MAiSPACE has taken those original ergonomic office furniture concepts and created a beautiful, stackable office furniture system that also has floor to ceiling capabilities. MAiSPACE designs are far removed from Scott Adam’s “Dilbert” looking monolithic office furniture cubicle. And with the introduction of beautiful, complementary, free standing wood office furniture, MAiSPACE allows companies to create a visually appealing footprint while meeting the needs of their employees, making them productive and comfortable.

Thinking outside the “box”, MAiSPACE’s design incorporates flexibility and function to allow workspaces to look attractive while being completely efficient. The ability to stack and de-stack panel frames provides staggered wall heights all the way to the ceiling and removes the boxy feel of most office furniture. With over 15 tile options, including three types of glass, on 3 1?2 “ thick panels, MAiSPACE promotes visibility and privacy, simultaneously. You can get the architectural feel of a substantial office furniture workstation with excellent acoustical properties, without feeling “boxed in.”

The Tower of London has a fascinating history spanning nearly 1,000 years. It has served various purposes over the centuries – fortress, prison, royal palace, jewel house, mint, arsenal and place of execution.

When work was begun by William the Conqueror in 1078, Londoners had never seen anything of the like before. He had stone specially imported from France to build the White Tower and its unique Norman style was quite outlandish to the locals.

William saw the need to build a fortress in this powerful and prosperous city not to defend it from foreign invasion, but to protect the conquering Normans from the city’s own inhabitants. For centuries afterwards, the Tower served the same purpose, providing safety and security for various monarchs from their own subjects in turbulent times.

As time passed and needs changed, the Tower was adapted and extended until it became an extensive complex of fortifications. The 13th century saw the establishment of a Royal Mint on the premises, as well as a menagerie. This private collection of exotic beasts is thought to have begun when Henry III received three big cats (leopards or possibly lions) as a wedding present in 1235. The Lion Tower was built to house the collection, which had become a public attraction by the late 18th century. However, with the opening of London Zoo in the early 19th century, the animals were transferred and the menagerie closed down. The Lion Gate is all that remains of the area where it was housed.

The Tower of London is probably most well known today for its notorious history of gunpowder, treason, imprisonment and murder. From the early days it was used as a prison and place of execution, often for very high profile or illustrious captives. Henry VIII had two of his wives beheaded on Tower Green – Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. The Reformation was a particularly gruesome time, when hoards of political and religious prisoners were incarcerated and executed. Probably the most famous is Lady Jane Grey, whom Edward VI declared his successor just before his death in 1553, fearing that his own daughter Mary would restore Catholicism. She was only a few days into her reign when Mary took the throne from her cousin and had her imprisoned and eventually executed on Tower Green in 1554. Mary also famously had her half-sister Elizabeth (later to become Queen Elizabeth I) imprisoned there for three months under suspicion of plots against her. Elizabeth herself had various notables incarcerated in the Tower upon her succession to the throne after Mary’s death – from aristocrats and dukes to clergymen and bishops.

Another event for which the Tower is infamously known is the mystery of the two boy princes in the 1480s. The two sons of Edward IV, Edward V and his younger brother Richard, were housed in the Tower by their Uncle (Richard, Duke of Gloucester) for ‘protection’ after the death of their father in 1483. Edward V was to be crowned King. However, the Duke took the throne himself and after remaining in the Tower for a short while afterwards, the boys vanished. Their fate is still a mystery today, although it is commonly believed that their uncle had them murdered.

In the 17th century, the Crown Jewels were first put on public display, and they can still be seen there today. It was also during this period that the Tower started to be used as an arsenal and armoury. During the 19th century, however, the Tower gradually lost many of its functions. As explained above, the menagerie was moved to London Zoo. The Royal Mint was moved to new buildings elsewhere in the city (although it’s now based in Cardiff) and the War Office moved the weaponry elsewhere. This wasn’t the beginning of the end for the Tower, though. In fact, it heralded a new and exciting period for the fortress. Medieval romanticism had started to become fashionable in Victorian times and architectural and historical interest in the Tower started to increase. The Victorians undertook an enormous programme of restoration and reconstruction, paving the way for it to become one of Britain’s most popular tourist attractions. Indeed, by the mid 19th century visitors were coming in droves and a ticket office had to built at the main entrance to cope with the crowds.

The Tower was very much still in use as an official public building though. Even in the 20th century, it was used as a prison during World War Two. The last execution took place here in 1941 – a German army sergeant was shot in the grounds by firing squad for spying.

To this day, it still retains its function as a royal residence and home of the Crown Jewels. As a result, it’s still guarded by its own ancient regiment of Yeomen Warders (more commonly known as Beefeaters) whose role is to guide and entertain tourists as much as it is to defend the Tower.

Although no royals have lived at the Tower for a long time, it still has one very important set of residents – the famous ravens. These black, long-beaked birds have been here for centuries. An old legend states that Britain will never be invaded as longs as ravens remain there, so they can still be seen wandering around the grounds today and even have their own guards to look after them. No-one’s taking any risks though – their wings are clipped to ensure they’ll never leave!

esigning the ergonomic office, one has to consider many factors including how much ergonomic equipment and furniture you will require, how many employees you are catering for and what their individual needs are. If you are going the whole hog and having your entire office ergonomically fitted and equipped, there is just about everything you need that has been designed with you in mind, from desks and chairs to mice and keyboards.

Ergonomic chairs should be designed so that the person’s spine has proper support and that the user can adjust the chair to the correct height for use at their desk. The chair should be adjustable in several areas including the back and the seat, and, some will even allow you to adjust the tension in the lumbar support area. When choosing a chair, make sure that it has adjustable arm rests, the height can be adjusted, a big enough and well padded seat, a good back rest, firm lumbar support and that it can swivel easily. Your feet should be squarely on the floor or on a proper foot rest. The chair should also be covered in a breathable fabric with enough padding underneath as this will help prevent pressure points forming.

There are many desks to choose from. Your own personal needs should be foremost in your choice as you know what equipment needs to be on the desk. It needs to be the correct height and depth for you to work from and should be chosen in conjunction with your chair. If necessary, your screen can be raised to the correct height with the use of specially made stands for your desk.

A variety of keyboards and mice are available and unless you know what you want, choosing the right keyboard can be a bit of a minefield because if it isn’t right for you, it will be no use and therefore a waste of money. First and foremost, the keyboard or mouse should be comfortable in your hands and you should be able to type and use the mouse without strain or discomfort.

The whole point of the ergonomic office is to promote well being, good posture, protect the spine and help prevent conditions such as RSI and back pain. It is therefore vital that you do proper research and try things out before you buy them. Make sure that everything is at the correct level for you to use and that you are not stretching, straining or slouching in your chair. Almost as important is taking a break from time to time and doing some stretching and flexing so that the muscles don’t get stiff and tight. After all, there is no point in investing all that money in good furniture and equipment if you are not going to use it properly and take the necessary breaks.

Selecting the correct office furniture is a difficult and time consuming work. The right office furniture reflects your personality as well as your work. Professional designers keep in mind a number of factors before finalising the office furniture for your workplace. A major part of the day is spent in office nowadays, therefore office furniture and office environment should always compliment your company’s goals and aspirations. The workplace should ideally comfortable as well as professional. Now, there are environments that are inspirational and thereby boost the performance level of the staff.

It might be that a new office is being opened or you want to revamp your old office. Since corporate workers nowadays spent a greater part of the day in office, office furniture and the entire atmosphere of your workplace should have relevance with your company’s goals and aspirations. The ideal workplace is both comfortable and professional. Very few of us know that typical environments act as energisers and motivate the staff to perform better.

Chair and desks should be such that employees and visitors can sit comfortably without hurting themselves or even having stretching any of their body parts to an extent that its disrupts their concentration while working. Office furniture not only includes chairs, desks, cabinets, etc. but also proper lighting arrangements. This is an important factor should be ignored in no way. The lights in the office area should neither be too less nor too harsh such that it affects any employee’s eyesight. Professional lighting consultants can give proper advice regarding the lighting arrangement that needs to be put up.

It is the duty of the employers to see that they offer their employees with some relaxation benefits. Retiring rooms and cafeterias have become common hideouts where employees can unwind themselves when they feel stressed out. The office furniture in these areas should also be chosen carefully.

These places should have energising power so that employees can relieve their stress and get back to work pretty soon. However, it is worth noting that most employers are engrossed with their business undertakings and hence do not have enough time for selecting the correct office furniture. One can look for the exclusive stores that deal with commercial office furniture or even purchase them from the various online stores available.

Stone, glass, metal and wood are now being used extensively within contemporary office furniture. While stone furniture purely contributes to giving your workplace an attractive look, glass furniture makes your not so big cabin look quite spacious. While most entrepreneurs go for wooden furniture, metal furniture also provides impressive work space.

Stone, glass, metal and wood are now being mostly used to make office furniture. Although stone furniture gives the workplace an attractive look, yet they are not very comfortable to work on. If the workplace is pretty small then glass furniture is the ideal choice. It will give a false impression that the area is big. Wood has to be the first choice for most entrepreneurs. Metal furniture also makes for good impression when used as office furniture. Modular office furniture has become very popular recently because of the unavailability of adequate space area. Modular office furniture is beneficial in cutting down both unwanted employee interaction and providing each employee with a personalised space as well.

The Indian A-Grade leasehold office space markets in India are currently at an all time high; both in terms of the quantum of space leased per annum and the prevailing rental values. A study conducted by global property advisers DTZ, reveals that while demand for the A-Grade leasehold office space in India continues to remain healthy, most cities in India, are seeing the beginning of an oversupply situation of office space that will continue in the short to medium term.

This study is a first of its kind in the Indian context – an objective, data-led demand supply analysis of the current state of A-Grade leasehold office space markets in India in the top seven Indian cities (Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune).

According to Ankur Srivastava, Managing Director, DTZ India, “Our city-level demand supply analysis, seen in conjunction with the macro-economic fundamentals, clearly indicates that office space rentals in India are likely to hit a plateau in the next six to twelve months. Barring a few exceptions (primarily the CBDs), the oversupply situation will lead to a correction in office space rental in India values. Or very simply, this correction in A-Grade office space rental values will not be driven by a lack of demand but due to the oversupply build-up.”

- The IT/ITES sector will continue to be the primary driver behind A-Grade leasehold office space sector, comprising around 70% of office space demand. Financial services, biosciences and pharmaceuticals will be the other significant contributors to the forecasted demand for AGrade leasehold office space

There are various factors that will define the degree and timing of this rental value correction For e.g. the threshold for this correction has been brought closer by the two recent interest rate hikes. DTZ has, therefore, deliberately refrained from commenting on either the extent or timing of this forecasted correction in A-Grade office space rentals in India.

That notwithstanding, DTZ firmly believes that the real estate India markets are entering their next phase/wave of evolution. The Indian real estate cycle saw its last crest in 1995-96 and the following years saw real estate values come down across the country. This correction also marked the first wave of evolution of the Indian real estate markets. The prime drivers of this change were the large foreign occupiers / corporates and IT firms that were establishing their presence in India and the most pronounced impact of this wave was a complete redefinition of what constituted A-Grade office space in India.

The Royal Marines are the part of the British Armed Forces. Marine crops and amphibious infantry of the United Kingdom are called as Royal Marines along with Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Royal navy from Naval Service. They are specialized in Arctic warfare and mountain warfare. They can quickly deploy and fight in any terrain in the world. They are highly trained, capable of operating independently and they are a core component of the country’s Rapid Deployment Force.

The longest basic modern infantry training programmed of any NATO combat troops is recruited by Royal Marines. Royal Marines recruit training the potential recruit must attend a Potential Royal Marine Course (PRMC) or Potential Officer Course (POC) held at CTCRM. PRMC lasts three days and assesses physical ability and intellectual capacity to undertake the recruit training. Through Admiralty Interview Board, all the Officer candidates must take.

Marine’s duties on shore were not restricted to amphibious warfare. They could be landed as guards in a friendly port or to keep seamen from desertion. In amphibious warfare these marines have their importance. Co-operations between the army and the navy often led to disputes of authority, the marines are clearly under naval discipline and more hence effective. The smart uniformed appearance was also used to impress enemies and allies.

Uniforms in general followed those of the army. Following the granting of “Royal” status in 1802 the whole marine uniform was updated. The new uniforms were ‘ by the King’s express command, the pattern of the First regiment of Foot Guards’. Sergeants were distinguished by knots on their right shoulders and lace trimmings of their jackets and hats. Corporals had only the knot. The rank and file marine wore two leather pipe clayed cross belts with a plate bearing the Marines badge joining them together.

Usually the recruitment of marines is carried out the army, as they were essentially landmen they could not be “impressed” like seamen. Posters were printed and stuck up in market places, and recruiting sergeants roamed the area trying to recruit young men with tales of action and adventure. Persuasion was not enough and in wartime a substantial bounty was offered which by 1801 had reached 26 per man. Despite this the rapid expansion of the navy caused a crisis as recruitment of marines did not match impressments of sailors. Some soldiers from the army were consequently used at sea and to overcome line of command problems many were offered bounties to transfer to the marines full time. The marines continued to expand throughout the Napoleonic Wars so that by 1805 some 30,000 marines had been voted by parliament. Marines like soldiers were traditionally recruited for life however during the 1790 there some attempt was made to recruit for the “duration” instead.

When we were growing up, we were taught to seat properly. For starters, sitting properly is not only courteous, but it also allows us to reach for the food at the dinner table better and talk with our families more effectively in the dinner table. In professional interviews, we are told to assume a correct sitting posture to emanate a sense of confidence. Now that we are hired and sitting in our trusty office chairs, perhaps it is time to give the idea of sitting another thought.

Imagine a world where you take notice how long you sit. With a good chunk of our hours sitting in office chairs for our usual workload, or plunging in our comfortable drafting chairs to complete our designs, we are left in one place for hours. Outside the office space, we still do a lot of sitting when we are driving, eating dinner, watching television, and studying. Sitting in office chairs is our “no-choice” comfortable position.

However, being lodged in one stationary chair for hours could not be healthy. An unhealthy sitting position can wear down our joints that we need for other activities. Sitting for long hours gives constant tension to our butt and thighs as our weight is transferred to these areas. Stress on our lower back increases pain and pressure on our spine disc, where it can cause critical complications if the disc breaks down.

Being stationary for long periods of time in an ergonomic office chair does not bode well for healthy blood circulation. Certain muscles in our body can stiff up and prevent blood from going the right way. Usually our blood is pooled on our legs and our buttocks which can restrict some from going to the heart. Thus, a seemingly normal and stationary activity done in extensive periods of time can cause serious health problems. These physical discomforts can include back pain, neck pain, abdominal pain, leg pain, eye strain, and repetitive movement disorders. Reducing the risks for these complications to happen is indeed a serious business.

To correct these problems, replacement office chairs as well as proper sitting practices are important. Ergonomic office chairs are designed to be functional and comfortable for the office worker while reducing the strain from improper sitting position. Most of the time, we assume a sitting position that is most comfortable to us and we constantly change our sitting position without realizing it. Thus, perfectly constructed ergonomics office chairs are important in keeping you posture in the right shape. These office chairs guide you until you assume another appropriate sitting posture.

Ergonomically designed office chairs also have features that will help the office worker screen out the physical stress from sitting down and doing their job. With nothing much to worry, the worker can be more productive and prevent less distraction in finishing his work. For architects, engineers, and designers who need a drafting chair or a design stool, there are also tall chairs that can help you finish their work. Drafting chairs are more known for their ability to balance weights while giving the worker a full set of hands to work with.

The idea of sitting is therefore not a passing thought. Just imagine how long we sit down then you can grasp the importance of developing proper sitting posture, and having the perfect set of office chairs.

When it comes to celebrating in your office space, school or even in your retail space if you are a business owner, where do you draw the line on celebrating or offending during religious holidays?

Over the years America has seen a radical switch in how holidays are celebrated in every public place. The term, politically correct in some people’s eyes has gone way too far but for others, the politically correct movement has helped Americans realize there are other people out there who have different beliefs and every right to celebrate how they choose. The double edge sword of being too politically correct or overly sensitive to everyone’s needs means that instead of accepting every culture and religion, public society has decided to not celebrate any of them openly. This can make things far more confusing than how it may have been long before the term politically correct made it so.

Here are Some Ways Your Office or Retail Space Can Still Celebrate The Time of Year Without Offending Anyone

•    Think spring! No one can be offended by the seasons

•    Pastels and polka dots are very spring and non-offensive

•    Decorate with weather, no one can deny that April showers happen, and no one can be offended with umbrella and raindrop decorations

•    Baby farm animals are born in the spring. Choosing to decorate your retail space with baby chicks and bunnies is perfectly acceptable

•    Go green! Decorate with the colors of spring. This means light greens, cherry blossoms, pink and yellows and lilac. Bring in flower pots of silk tulips or blossoms or even small pots of grass to place as displays in your retail space window or in the waiting room of your office space

•    Outdoor exercise- once the weather gets nicer, that means people are going to the park, riding bikes and even going to the beach. Think of outdoor activities as a means to decorate your office, like setting up an old fashioned bike with a basket filled with spring tulips in the window or colorful kites strung up in your office space.

You can play it safe by celebrating the weather, nature, pastel colors and outdoor activities or you could divide up the week and celebrate every day by recognizing a different religious celebration or during the holy week, create a mosaic of religious icons, spring flowers and Easter bunnies all together, displaying that your office or retail space celebrates everyone and everything about this time of year.

Most people spend long hours each week in their office, making it very important to have the right style of furniture. While comfort is important, you really need to be more focused on the office furniture being ergonomically correct then on the color or material of it.

You will feel much better at the end of the work day, and have more energy to complete your tasks with an ergonomically correct office chair. It will help improve your posture, resulting in less pain in your back and neck areas. It will also reduce the risk of office injuries and claims.

If you use a computer in your office on a regular basis, not having the right posture can lead to carpal tunnel in your wrists. This is the result of moving them in a particular repetitive motion throughout the day. Along with an ergonomically correct keyboard, you can prevent such injuries from happening.

Many manufacturers of ergonomically correct office furniture offer a wide selection of office furniture products to choose from. This allows you to still get a great looking office but one that is designed for your body as well. It is a good idea to purchase ergonomically correct office furniture with the help of a qualified consultant. They will be able to identity what needs to be improved with your current working conditions.

You can purchase entire office furniture work stations including desks, chairs, computers, keyboards, and all the accessories that are ergonomically correct. You can save a great deal of money if you purchase a package deal than if you buy one or two pieces separately.

Many people who use office furniture don’t realize that it has a negative effect on their posture, health, productivity, and even their mood. More employers are starting to recognize the importance of providing ergonomically correct office furniture. Not only do the employees get more work accomplished, they take fewer sick days.
